Chinese Healing Illustrations, Part Two (45)

This video continues to highlight the differences between East and West in healing methods and approaches for different categories of ailments.

Fertility
Chinese: Fertility is the result of a natural and enjoyable sex life. Fertility suffers if life is full of stress such as work and unnecessary pressures. Physical weakness or imbalance also contributes to low fertility, in which case, herbs are used to enhance potency and fertility (See my videos on female fertility and male sexual potency).

Western: Use Viagra for instant satisfaction without improving fertility. Advocate mechanical methods such as sperm count, monitoring menstrual cycle, ovulation, and body temperature. Artificial methods of fertilization are also developed. All of these add stresses to peoples sex life, making it mechanical and less enjoyable without really helping fertility.

Anxiety and Stress
Chinese: Anxiety and stress are a result of the daily pressures of life. Some people can manage them better than others. So good management of anxiety and stress is the crux of the problem. This means helping people to better organize their lives is essential. On the physical side, anxiety and stress cause the body to lose balance, which in turn makes it harder for people to manage them. So herbs and relaxation methods are used to help restore balance of the body (See my videos on anxiety and sleep).

Western: Western solutions seem to gravitate to substance dependency. Various kinds of pills are used to sedate the body while the daily pressures of life are still waiting for better management.

Weight Control
Chinese: Overweight results from too much eating and too little physical work. It is really a management problem similar to anxiety and stress. Contrary to public belief, there are no Chinese herbs for losing weight, although many herbs can help with improved digestion, purging and water regulation. (See my video on weight loss).

Western: Since weight control is big business, there exist all kinds of pills and nutritional/exercise schemes out there in the market place designed to please the consumers. Again, the Western solution emphasizes on substance or technical approach rather than better managing your daily life.

Menstrual and Menopause
Chinese: Menstrual irregularities and menopause are age-old problems affecting women. Plenty of herbs have been discovered in this area. The Chinese approach aims to minimize the discomforts and restore balance to the body, knowing that you cannot make these natural occurrences go away (See my videos on menstrual irregularities and menopause).

Western: Birth control pills are the standard prescription for menstrual irregularities. So are hormone pills for menopause. Removal of the uterus is generally recommended for older age. For some reason, osteoporosis drugs are tied and marketed with menopause. Why are men left out of osteoporosis treatment? Is it because they are immune?

Low Energy
Chinese: As a symptom, low energy always manifests itself when something goes wrong with the body, whether major or minor. As a root cause, low energy is a clear sign of body weakening or degeneration. Plenty of herbs exist for strengthening the organs, the blood and its circulation, and also for helping the body to maintain balance (See my video on low energy).

Western: Vitamins or iron supplements are generally prescribed in addition to better nutrition. In the health clubs or stores, various kinds of energy snacks, drinks or pills are available.

Skin Care
Chinese: Skin problems take a long time to heal and they tend to flare up again under some conditions. Good maintenance is necessary to keep the skin stay healthy. The Chinese approach involves nourishing, soothing and moisturizing the skin with herbs and food besides just fixing existing problems (See my videos on skin rash, and skin & beauty).

Western: Dermatologists specialize in skin care. Most of the prescriptions are external as compared with oral for Chinese herbs. In more serious cases, radiation treatment is employed.
