Chinese Diagnostic Illustrations, Part I
This video illustrates how Chinese diagnosis is done for various common ailments. It follows from my previous video entitled, “A Practical Road Map”. In case you forget, the requirements of diagnosis are: objectivity, rationality, and connection to the herbs.
Fever or flu
Fever or flu has many observable symptoms. It is not hard to connect the diagnostic result to the herbs. Various kinds of herbs exist for conditions such as excess heat in the body, cough, phlegm, sore throat, headache, etc. The only difficulty is to determine how strong the prescription should be. You must rely on pulse reading and your reasoning to arrive at the appropriate strength of the herbal prescription. A person with a weak constitution like a senior must be given a mild prescription rather than a strong one. For further details, see my other videos, “Flu or Cold” and “Cough”.
Cholesterol or Blood Sugar
How can you diagnose high cholesterol or blood sugar with Chinese ancient methods? You just cant. Cholesterol and sugar are chemical substances in the blood that can only be detected in a blood test, which is a Western method. The Chinese herbalist has to rely on the results of the blood test to see and monitor the problem.
How can you connect to the herbs? The names cholesterol and blood sugar dont connect of course. You must apply simple reasoning of cause and effect. Cholesterol and sugar are present in the food you eat. This points to the digestive system where plenty of herbs can be applied. If the digestive system is strengthened or made more robust with herbs, it will break down the food more thoroughly. In this way, the cholesterol and sugar will be broken down and expelled, rather than staying in the blood stream. Your reasoning also points to higher metabolism to break down cholesterol and blood sugar. This connects to the herbs used to boost blood circulation. For further details, please see “Basic Healing Approaches of Chinese Medicine”.
Toxins
The toxins in your blood are only observable when the threshold level is reached. The problem will manifest itself ranging from a minor skin rash, to a serious one like cancer. Chinese diagnosis cannot detect anything below the threshold point without relying on Western blood or other tests. Furthermore, it cannot tell what kind of toxin or chemical substance is present in the blood. No specific toxin can connect to a Chinese herb. However, there exist various kinds of cleansing herbs to purge toxins from the body. So Chinese herbs are toxin general, not toxin specific.
How can Chinese diagnosis work then? Again, you rely on the Western blood test to verify and monitor. Then you apply the simple reason of cause and effect. For prevention, stay away from polluted areas and polluted food. For treatment, apply various kinds of cleansing herbs to reduce the toxicity in your body. In addition, apply herbs to strengthen the liver and kidneys, because they are major cleansing organs of the body. For further details, see my video on “Detoxification”.
Anxiety, Stress, Sleeplessness
This trio usually comes together. They present a variety of subtle symptoms, which are hard to detect and measure. Chinese diagnostic methods emphasize discussing with the patient about his lifestyle and attitude, and about the kind of stress that he is dealing with everyday.
From the Chinese viewpoint, anxiety, stress and sleeplessness are the result of a loss of balance, which in turn results from a weak body that fails to readjust itself and maintain balance in difficult situations. This points to the necessity to strengthen the body for better performance. However, too strong a strengthening prescription may bring an opposite effect. Therefore, the job of the herbalist is to tailor a mild prescription to make the body more robust to handle everyday stress. Please see my other videos on “Anxiety and Stress”, “Sleep”, and “Balance”.

Chinese Healing Illustrations, Part Two (45)
This video continues to highlight the differences between East and West in healing methods and approaches for different categories of ailments.
Fertility
Chinese: Fertility is the result of a natural and enjoyable sex life. Fertility suffers if life is full of stress such as work and unnecessary pressures. Physical weakness or imbalance also contributes to low fertility, in which case, herbs are used to enhance potency and fertility (See my videos on female fertility and male sexual potency).
Western: Use Viagra for instant satisfaction without improving fertility. Advocate mechanical methods such as sperm count, monitoring menstrual cycle, ovulation, and body temperature. Artificial methods of fertilization are also developed. All of these add stresses to peoples sex life, making it mechanical and less enjoyable without really helping fertility.
Anxiety and Stress
Chinese: Anxiety and stress are a result of the daily pressures of life. Some people can manage them better than others. So good management of anxiety and stress is the crux of the problem. This means helping people to better organize their lives is essential. On the physical side, anxiety and stress cause the body to lose balance, which in turn makes it harder for people to manage them. So herbs and relaxation methods are used to help restore balance of the body (See my videos on anxiety and sleep).
Western: Western solutions seem to gravitate to substance dependency. Various kinds of pills are used to sedate the body while the daily pressures of life are still waiting for better management.
Weight Control
Chinese: Overweight results from too much eating and too little physical work. It is really a management problem similar to anxiety and stress. Contrary to public belief, there are no Chinese herbs for losing weight, although many herbs can help with improved digestion, purging and water regulation. (See my video on weight loss).
Western: Since weight control is big business, there exist all kinds of pills and nutritional/exercise schemes out there in the market place designed to please the consumers. Again, the Western solution emphasizes on substance or technical approach rather than better managing your daily life.
Menstrual and Menopause
Chinese: Menstrual irregularities and menopause are age-old problems affecting women. Plenty of herbs have been discovered in this area. The Chinese approach aims to minimize the discomforts and restore balance to the body, knowing that you cannot make these natural occurrences go away (See my videos on menstrual irregularities and menopause).
Western: Birth control pills are the standard prescription for menstrual irregularities. So are hormone pills for menopause. Removal of the uterus is generally recommended for older age. For some reason, osteoporosis drugs are tied and marketed with menopause. Why are men left out of osteoporosis treatment? Is it because they are immune?
Low Energy
Chinese: As a symptom, low energy always manifests itself when something goes wrong with the body, whether major or minor. As a root cause, low energy is a clear sign of body weakening or degeneration. Plenty of herbs exist for strengthening the organs, the blood and its circulation, and also for helping the body to maintain balance (See my video on low energy).
Western: Vitamins or iron supplements are generally prescribed in addition to better nutrition. In the health clubs or stores, various kinds of energy snacks, drinks or pills are available.
Skin Care
Chinese: Skin problems take a long time to heal and they tend to flare up again under some conditions. Good maintenance is necessary to keep the skin stay healthy. The Chinese approach involves nourishing, soothing and moisturizing the skin with herbs and food besides just fixing existing problems (See my videos on skin rash, and skin & beauty).
Western: Dermatologists specialize in skin care. Most of the prescriptions are external as compared with oral for Chinese herbs. In more serious cases, radiation treatment is employed.

Contributed by: (http://www.india-herbs.com):
The goal of Ayurvedic medicine is to prevent diseases before they occur. Studies have suggested that Ayurveda may be particularly effective at reducing the risk of heart disease. For example, a recent study found that this traditional Indian medicine helped reduce plaque and reverse the thickening of artery walls known as atherosclerosis in both healthy adults as well as adults at high risk for heart disease. (Atherosclerosis is a slow, complex disease in which fatty substances, cholesterol, cellular waste products, calcium, and other substances build up in the inner lining of an artery. This build-up, also known as plaque, can lead to heart attack and stroke.)
Combining yoga with an Ayurvedic herbal remedy containing Winter cherry (Withania somnifera), Boswellia (Boswellia serrata), and Turmeric (Curcuma longa) can reduce pain and disability if you have arthritis.
What should I expect from an Ayurvedic treatment?
Ayurvedic treatment focuses on rebalancing the doshas. On your first visit, the practitioner will take a detailed medical history, check your pulse, palpate your abdomen, examine your tongue, eyes, nails, and skin, and listen to the tone of your voice. He or she will also ask you questions about your general state of health with special focus on your lifestyle, diet, habits, and environmental surroundings. Based on this assessment, he or she will then make recommendations on how to restore your natural dosha balance, which almost always includes changes in lifestyle, particular diet. Practitioners draw from more than 20 types of treatment, but the most commonly prescribed include:
• Pranayama — breathing exercises. Practicing pranayama generates feelings of calmness.
• Abhyanga — rubbing the skin with herbalized oil (usually sesame oil is the base) to increase blood circulation and draw toxins out of the body through the skin.
• Rasayana — using mantras (repeated words or phrases) during meditation combined with specific herbs to rejuvenate a person.
• Yoga — combining pranayama, movement, and meditation. Has been shown to improve circulation and digestion, and to reduce blood pressure, cholesterol levels, anxiety, and chronic pain.
• Pancha karma — cleansing the body of toxins to purify the body and reduce cholesterol. Practitioners use methods to induce sweat, bowel movements, and even vomit in an effort to cleanse the body of toxins.
• Herbal medicines — prescribing herbs to restore dosha balance.
Physiotherapy accompanied by herbal medication can alleviate the symptoms of a paralytic stroke. The vitalizing body massages prevent the inactive muscles from atrophying and medication helps to improve the circulatory system. Regular Panchakarma prevents stroke by maintaining normal blood pressure and keeping the arteries healthy. The endothelium of the arteries gets damaged due to accumulation of toxins and subsequent formation of thrombus. These thrombi, when dislodged, can cause stroke. Regular Panchakarma and Ayurveda lifestyle prevents this catastrophe.
A number of Ayurvedic herbal remedes have been evaluated for their beneficial effects. For example, Guggulipid (Commiphora mukul), a traditional Ayurvedic medication used to treat high cholesterol, is widely used in India. It appears to effectively lower cholesterol by blocking the production of cholesterol in the liver. Similarly, fenugreek (Trigonella foenum graecum) seeds can decrease LDL cholesterol and triglycerides, and increase HDL cholesterol levels. These effects seem to be due to reduced intestinal absorption of cholesterol, and may be related to the high fiber content of the seed. Fenugreek seeds may also help control your blood sugars if you have diabetes, again because of the high fiber content.
Other Ayurvedic herbs are being studied as treatments for Alzheimer’s disease, anxiety, asthma, dementia, dysmenorrhea (painful menstruation), herpes, high blood pressure, Parkinson’s disease, perimenopausal problems, and premenstrual syndrome, amongst many other conditions. Ayurvedic herbs combined with conventional medications may also be helpful for acne, chronic constipation, chronic fatigue syndrome, irritable bowel syndrome, obesity, and uterine fibroids.
Be sure to consult your doctor before trying Ayurveda, especially if you take medicines or have certain dietary restrictions such as with diabetes.
